Most jobs run through a similar process, starting with a chemical wash, followed by a pressure wash. All the prep goes next: rust or tile repair. Once all the prep is done, the first primer coat goes on. Following that a defect check is undertaken; if another primer is needed it will be applied, if not it is followed by two top coats of Resene's roof painting system.

Roof painting is usually priced on the area of the roof, but two roofs of the same size can come back with quite different numbers.

Pitch is the first reason. A low-pitch roof can often be walked and worked directly. A steep one slows everything down and needs more in the way of safety equipment before anyone sets foot on it.

Material is the second. Long-run steel, corrugate, concrete tile and pressed metal tile each take different preparation and a different coating system. Tile generally takes longer than steel, because there is more surface area and far more edge to cover.

Then there's condition, which is usually the biggest single variable in a roof quote. A sound roof that needs a wash and a coat sits at one end. A roof with widespread rust, cracked tiles or screws needing replacement sits at the other, and that remedial work can be a significant part of the job before any colour goes on.

Access and detail fill in the rest — single or two storey, how tight the site is, and how many vents, flues, skylights and spouting runs have to be cut in around rather than sprayed straight over.
