Washing and Surface Preparation
Starting off with a chemical wash, using Resene Moss and Mould Killer, followed by either a soft or hard pressure wash depending on the surface, in order to get the surface ready for prep and paint. Prep usually consists of stripping back damaged paint and sanding down all areas until you are left with a beautiful smooth surface. Depending on the material used in your fence, this may be loosely scraping back damaged or flaking paint on brick or concrete, while for steel a light high-grit sand may be required. It is also common for rust to appear. This may be on your steel fence, however it is also very common to find rust in the screw heads of timber fencing. This needs to be treated specifically before any paint gets applied. This is done by removing the rust and applying Resene's specific metal primer, preventing rust from coming back before applying other general primers or top coats.

After the surface is thoroughly prepared and has been defect checked, top coats can then begin to be applied. For fences it is common to use either a water-based or oil-based paint. Oil-based paints will offer more protection and durability, however may slightly yellow over time, whereas water-based paints apply quicker and hold their colour for far longer.

Yes, we offer spray painting as one of our services, most commonly used for fence painting, as it is more efficient and allows us to access all areas of your fence. Spray painting will leave your fence with a factory-like finish, smooth and without any texturing. However, this means it is important for our prep to be perfect, as any blemishes will show through. That is one thing that most other painters skip over. They think you can just spray over previous coatings, which may look alright initially, however it will not last long and any defects will show through. The other half of spraying properly is containment. A fence sits on a boundary, usually a metre from someone's car, their washing line, their garden or their windows, and overspray travels further than people expect. We mask and screen thoroughly, and we simply will not spray in wind that puts anything at risk, even if it costs us a day. On palings with gaps between them we screen behind the fence as well, because spray passes straight through. On bare or freshly sanded timber we will often back roll or brush the first coat into the grain rather than spraying it, so the coating keys into the surface properly instead of sitting on top of it. Without a team of professionals such as ourselves coming in to do the proper prep, and taking the time and care to get your fence right before any paint is applied, it will leave you with a bigger issue than the one you started with. So yes, we do spray paint, but only after all the prep work a good fence spray painter does beforehand.

We paint all types of fences. Whether you have a timber, steel, brick or render fence, we have the paint and expertise for you. While each is different, requiring different prep, materials and paints, our team will be able to get the job done. Timber covers most of what we see, from treated pine palings and pickets through to cedar and hardwood, and each takes a finish differently. Treated pine needs to be properly weathered and dry before coating or the finish will not hold. Cedar will bleed tannin through the wrong primer and stain the coat above it, so the sealer underneath matters as much as the colour on top. Steel and aluminium need the right adhesion or etch primer depending on whether they are galvanised, powder coated or already rusting, and skipping that step is why so many painted steel fences peel in sheets. Brick, render and concrete block need a breathable masonry system so trapped moisture can escape rather than pushing the coating off. There are also fences we will tell you honestly not to paint. PVC and some composite fencing will not hold a coating reliably no matter what goes underneath it, and painting a factory powder coated aluminium fence commits you to repainting it forever. We would rather say that at the quote than take the job. One thing worth raising early is boundary fences. If the fence is shared, it is worth having the conversation with your neighbour before we start, particularly about colour and about access to their side. The cost to paint your fence will vary heavily depending on the material of your fence and its condition. Generally, timber fences require more prep, as most timber fences being painted will require grain filling, certain primers, top coats and applications, as timber shows defects more than other materials. Steel, brick or render fences don't show any grain or visual defects in comparison to timber. These other materials are easier to work on as they generally just require a chemical wash, pressure wash, primer coat and top coat, without all the additional prep. Fences are usually priced on linear metres and height rather than floor area, so a long low boundary fence and a short tall one can come out very differently even when they look like a similar job. Whether we are coating one side or both makes a significant difference too, and that often depends on whether we can get access to the neighbouring side. Gates, posts, caps and rails all add detail work, and a fence with heavy vegetation growing through it or gardens planted hard against it takes longer because everything has to be cut back, protected and worked around. Another thing that can vary the price heavily is the type of finish that you want, whether that be a stain, an oil, a water-based paint or an oil-based paint. Each varies significantly in pricing and requires different methods of prep beforehand, all adjusting the final price. Access is another big factor that may bump up the price. This depends on the material of your fence and the type of paint, stain or oil that you have previously applied to your fence. Timber fences usually require painting every 7 or so years, however if they are stained or oiled they will need to be recoated more regularly, say every 2-3 years. This isn't a major job. If you have maintained your fence well, washing it once a year, then it will be pretty straightforward. Fences also rarely fail evenly, and knowing where to look tells you more than the calendar does. The bottom 300 millimetres takes constant splash off the ground and is usually the first to go. The tops and caps take the most direct sun and will fade and chalk before the faces do. The south facing side holds moisture and grows moss while the north and west sides fade. On a stained or oiled fence the quickest check is to splash water on it. If it beads up, the finish is still working. If it soaks straight in and darkens the timber, it is time to recoat. Without proper maintenance, contaminants may build up over time and quickly decrease the life of your fence. Brick and render may be repainted every 8 years, while steel can last up to 10-15 years. This is considering that the existing coatings have been applied properly, with the correct prep, application methods, high-quality paints, etc. Also assuming that they are maintained as mentioned before, getting pressure washed at least once a year. Catching it at the recoat stage rather than the failure stage is what keeps the cost down, and our fence painters will tell you honestly which stage you are at.
