Deck Painting Preparation Starts With a Wash
Proper deck painting preparation starts with a deck chemical wash — we use Resene — followed by a soft pressure wash, not necessarily a hard pressure wash, as this may damage the timber fibers and reduce the life of your deck. Light scrubbing may be necessary in order to remove all the dirt, grime and moss that may be growing on your deck. Following that, it is important to let the timber dry completely before beginning any work.

Stripping Back to Bare Timber
In some cases, where previous paint, stain or oil has been used and is failing, we may decide it is best to strip off the previous coating and bring it back to bare timber. This will be discussed following our initial inspection, where we will be able to see the condition of the deck and decide with you on the best solution in order to get your deck back to its best. By stripping it back to bare timber, we are able to apply the coatings correctly, ensuring the right applications are being used, with correct dry times, etc. Applying coatings on top of previously failed coatings is a recipe for disaster. It will cost you more as it won't last as long, and eventually lead to you having to get it done again before long.
Sanding for a Uniform Finish
If we choose not to strip, prep may also include light sanding, in order to ensure the finish is uniform, without any areas darker or lighter than other sections. Sanding it back slightly to bring the surface to the same level before applying our coats of paint allows us to leave a perfectly uniform finish on your deck.

Deck painting is at the lower end when it comes to pricing in comparison to other painting services. This is due to the smaller surface area, as well as the easy application process. However, pricing can vary based on surface condition, the finish you are after and access. The biggest single variable is what is already on the timber. A deck that only needs a wash, a light sand and a recoat is a very different job to one where a previous coating is peeling and has to be stripped back to bare timber first, and stripping can easily double the labour on a deck. The second thing people do not expect is that flat deck area is the cheap part. Balustrades, handrails, spindles, stair stringers and treads are all detail work done by brush, and a small deck wrapped in balustrade can genuinely cost more than a large open one with a simple edge. Timber species matters too, as hardwoods and older tanalised pine take coatings differently. Access is the last one. A ground level deck is straightforward, while an elevated deck where the underside, stringers and pole bases need doing takes longer and may need access equipment. We will also confirm at the inspection whether the quote covers just the deck surface or includes the balustrade, stairs and framing beneath, because that is where different quotes are most often drawn differently. Deck painting is relatively quick. The main time consumers are the preparation stages, where furniture, belongings, etc. need to be moved off. Applying the chemical deck wash, scrubbing and removing all debris, finally finishing with a pressure wash. This alone can take a day, and painting cannot start until the surface is completely dry. Therefore it may take multiple days. A typical range is from 1-3 days. What stretches that range is almost always drying rather than painting. Timber holds water far longer than it looks like it does, and a deck that feels dry underfoot the morning after a wash can still be well above the moisture level a coating needs. In summer you might be ready the next day. In winter, or on a shaded south facing deck, it can be three or four days before we can start, and no coating will perform if it is applied over damp timber. Coats then need their own recoat times, and oils and stains need curing before furniture goes back on and the deck takes full traffic. We will tell you when it is walkable and when it is genuinely ready for use, because those are two different days. We also will not start a wash if there is rain in the forecast for the following days, because that just leaves us a wet deck to wait out. Where a deck is the main access to the house, we stage the work so you always have a way in. If your deck needs stripping back to bare timber first, add time again. This will be discussed during our initial site inspection and the job timeframe estimate will be included in your quotation, along with an honest note if the forecast means we may need to move things.

As mentioned, there are 3 main systems used when painting decks. These are paint (oil/water based), stain (oil/water based), and oil. All have different pros and cons, as well as different preparation methods and ways of application. Paint gives you the widest colour range and the best coverage over timber that has aged unevenly or been patched, and it lasts the longest between coats. The trade-off is that it forms a film, and on a horizontal surface taking sun, rain and foot traffic, a film eventually lifts. When it does you are sanding or stripping rather than simply recoating. Stain penetrates rather than forming a film, so it wears back gradually instead of peeling, and recoating is usually just a clean and another coat. You keep the grain, you get reasonable colour choice, and you are on a shorter cycle. Oil is the most natural looking of the three and feeds the timber rather than sitting on it, which suits hardwoods and newer decks particularly well, but it is the shortest cycle of all and needs the most regular attention. Two practical points sit alongside all of that. Dark colours look sharp on a deck but get genuinely hot underfoot in summer, which matters if you have kids or a dog. And on stairs and wet areas an anti-slip additive can be worked into the final coat, worth raising before we start. What is already on your deck also narrows the options, because you cannot simply oil over an old paint film. During our site inspection we will relay all this information to you, walk you through each process and decide together which solution is best for your decking, based on how it looks now, how you use it and how much maintenance you actually want to take on.

No, varnish is not recommended for exterior decking. If your deck has been previously stained, adding a top coat of varnish will not adhere correctly. It is also not suitable to be used in exterior applications, especially where there is heavy foot traffic. Often lasting only up to 6 months before it begins to crack, flake and come off. The reason comes down to what varnish was designed for. It is a hard, film forming finish built for interior joinery and furniture, surfaces that stay dry, stay out of direct sun and do not get walked on. A deck is the opposite of all three. It sits flat so water pools rather than runs off, it takes full UV all day, and the timber underneath expands and contracts with moisture and temperature. Varnish is too rigid to move with it, so it cracks, water gets underneath, and the film lifts in sheets. Once that happens you cannot spot repair it. The whole deck has to be sanded or stripped back to bare timber before anything else can go on, which is a far bigger and more expensive job than the original coating ever was. People sometimes ask about marine or spar varnish as an alternative, since it is built to flex and handle UV. It is a better product outdoors, but it is designed for boat brightwork that gets maintained every single year, not a deck that gets walked on and forgotten. If you want a clear or natural finish on your deck, a purpose made decking oil or a clear penetrating stain will give you that look while wearing back gradually instead of failing catastrophically.
