Our story
The Painter Guy was established in Wellington in 2013 and built its name on one thing: doing the preparation properly, even on the parts nobody would ever see. Abdi has now brought the business to Auckland, with the same process and the same standard on every job.
How we got here
From one city to two
-
2013
Started in Wellington
The Painter Guy began as a residential painting business in Wellington, on homes where the preparation decides whether a finish lasts. From the start the work was people's houses: interiors, exteriors and restoration, done by a team that genuinely cares how the job turns out.
-
Since
Built on preparation
Across more than 600 jobs, the reputation came from the unglamorous part: stripping, sealing, filling and sanding before a top coat ever goes on. It's slower, and it's the part most people never see, but it's the difference between a paint job that looks good at handover and one that still looks good years later.
-
Now
Bringing it to Auckland
Abdi now leads The Painter Guy in Auckland. We're newer here, so every job carries the same process and the same standard the business was built on. Rather than point at a job count, we'd rather point you at our Auckland reviews, from a Grey Lynn villa to a Ponsonby home and a rental repaint.
Who you'll deal with
Meet Abdi
Abdi is the Managing Director of The Painter Guy Akl, and the person you'll speak to from the first quote through to the final walkthrough. There's no hand-off to a salesperson you never see again. The person who prices your job is the person who stands behind it. You'll have his direct number from the first visit, so a question mid-job is a quick call, not a message passed along a chain.

Beyond the brush
Giving back
A trade business is part of a community, and we'd like to leave it a little better than we found it. That means backing causes that matter to the people we work alongside, and the clubs that bring a neighbourhood together.
-
Men's mental health
We teamed up with New Zealand band Drax Project on a campaign raising awareness for men's mental health, a topic that too often goes undiscussed in the trades. It's a conversation worth having on every site, not just once a year.
-
Local sport
We sponsor Petone FC, part of the Wellington community the business grew up in. Supporting a local club is a small way of backing the community that backed us.
