Painting a house nobody is living in is a different job to painting one a family is still in the middle of. An empty house you can work straight through — coat a room, shut the door, come back tomorrow. A lived-in one has to keep working as a house the whole time it is being painted. People still need to cook dinner, get kids to bed, and let the dog out.
So it gets planned in a different order. One room at a time, finished and back in use before the next one starts, so there is never a night where the family has nowhere to be. Everything covered and everything put back at the end of each day rather than left out — because what is a work site to us is somebody's living room by six o'clock.
The dates moved more than once, which is what happens on a job like this, and that is not a problem as long as everyone knows where they stand. We worked around the family rather than the other way round.
